From the Desk of the :

Executive Director

April 2005

Since our launch in November 2004, BrightSide Opportunities Center’s (BSOC) membership total has reached over 1000 families including seniors, adults, and children. Out of the 1000 families served, 480 are youths ranging in age from 6 – 18 years old.  BSOC has provided over 100 hours of family counseling; 450 hours of group counseling and over 1000 hours of individual counseling. And on a nutritional note, BSOC has served over 5000 free meals; a hot meal is served every evening to our youths. Our tutors are doing a great job! With their assistance, we have successfully provided over 300 hours of tutoring in English, Math, Reading, and Computer Science. One mother boast that the tutoring sessions have greatly improved her daughter’s tests scores. That’s the kind of success story we work hard for and are most proud of.  In addition to a phenomenal membership growth, our staff continues to grow – there are currently 4 full time staff members, 6 part-time staff members, 8 interns, and 15 volunteers dedicated and committed to accomplishing our mission to develop youth mentally, spiritually, and physical through culturally diverse programs; promote and engage in economic development by initiating and mentoring small businesses; and foster wellness and self-sufficiency for the greater community. Believe me when I say this is just the beginning!

Not only do our youths have the opportunities to growth intellectually, BSOC provides the opportunities for our youths to develop spiritually, socially, artistically, and physically.

Currently there are 18 clubs and activities that offer the chance for development in the:

Journalism Club, Cooking Club, Drama Club, Drill/Dance Club

Photography Club, Arts and Crafts Club, Chest Club, Billiards Club, · Movie Night

Fitness Classes, Youth Entrepreneur Program, Family Financial Fitness Classes

Computer Classes, Summer Camp, Field Trips, Monthly Personal Investment Seminars.

Some of our most notable accomplishments are:

·Increase number of youth thinking about attending college

·Increased number of youth participating in positive activities during the hours of 3pm to 8 pm

·Increase in the number of youth completing homework assignments

Decrease in the number of delinquency referrals for the youth participating BSOC activities

·Increase in parental participation

·Increase in the number of hours families participate in activities together

·Increase in the number of youth participating in Physical Fitness classes

With the very compassionate, giving, and sincere support of our sponsors, BSOC has achieved various significant successes for our community. With your continue support, we will continue to work hard to provided the life-sustaining services to members of our great community.

Sincerely,

Andrew Marshall
